Spooky Secrets & Royal Gossip: Student visit to Samlesbury Hall!

15.10.2026

Students decided to learn history the fun way during their recent Community Access lesson. The group headed straight down the road to Samlesbury Hall near Preston, and let鈥檚 just say, things got a little bit spooky!

听

The main goal of our Community Access trips is to build real-world independence. Our students did a fantastic job managing their own belongings, and practicing social skills. But the absolute highlight of the day was diving into the hall's wildest historical gossip and ghost stories.

听

Here is what the students discovered (and what kept us talking all the way home in the minibus):

听

路 The Legend of the White Lady: We climbed up to the attic to check out the spine-chilling, Ghost Room which is said to be haunted by Lady Dorothea Southworth (the famous鈥 White Lady"). The students learned about her tragic, star-crossed love story. She wasn't allowed to marry her boyfriend because of a family religious feud, and when they tried to run away, her brothers caught them! It was a great way for the group to talk about relationships choices.

听

路 Creeping Around the Witch's Garret: We also braved the eerie "Witch鈥檚 Garret" room. The students learned about the famous Samlesbury Witches and the massive court case where a local girl accused her neighbours of some pretty wild, magical plots. The students loved figuring out the difference between historical facts and silly old rumours.

听

路 Henry VIII & The King's Room: Finally, we tracking down the hall's connections to the most dramatic king in history. The students got to look closely at a stunning stained-glass window featuring the coats of arms of English kings and queens.

听

Students finished off the morning playing in the mini replica Samlesbury Hall play house, and using balancing and gross motor skills to navigate the rope bridges and adventure playground.
